FAQS
Who has acupuncture?
Acupuncture attracts a diverse range of patients. Some seek relief from specific issues, while others use it for a general health maintenance and their sense of well-being. It is a safe and effective therapy for all ages.
What happens when I go for treatment?
Your initial acupuncture consultation will involve a thorough discussion of your current health concerns, your presenting symptoms, past treatments you’ve received, and your overall medical history. To gain a rounded understanding of your well-being, this may also involve exploring aspects of your lifestyle, including dietary habits, sleep patterns, and emotional state.
In addition to this detailed consultation, a pulse diagnosis on both wrists and a visual examine your tongue will also usually be carried out. These traditional techniques provide valuable insights into your body’s energetic state according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles.
As TCM views the body as a connected system, acupuncture points selected for treatment may not always be located directly on the area experiencing discomfort. For instance, if you’re experiencing headaches, needles might be inserted in your foot or hand based on TCM principles aimed at addressing the root cause of the imbalance.
How will I feel after acupuncture?
Many people experience a sense of relaxation and calmness following acupuncture. However, there can be other variations:
- Relaxation and Calm: This is the most common response, and you may feel a deep sense of peace and well-being.
- Temporary Fatigue: If the treatment was particularly strong, you might feel a bit tired or drowsy for a few hours afterward. This is temporary and can be a sign that the treatment is working.
- Brief Symptom Fluctuation: Occasionally, you may experience a slight temporary increase in your symptoms as your body’s energy (Qi) clears and rebalances itself. This is usually short-lived.
How long does a treatment session last?
A treatment session lasts up to one hour.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of acupuncture sessions needed depend of each person’s unique situation:
- Treatment Frequency and Duration: The frequency and length of treatment will vary based on your specific condition. Typically, treatments are once a week during the initial phase of treatment.
- Individual Response: Some people experience noticeable improvement after just five sessions, while others may require only one or two. Conversely, some chronic conditions may necessitate treatment over several months or even a longer-term plan.
How much does a treatment session cost?
Each treatment session costs £55. The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) maintains a list of private health insurers that may cover the costs of acupuncture treatment when it is carried out by a BAcC registered acupuncturist.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is generally considered a safe treatment when performed by a qualified and experienced acupuncturist. Here’s what ensures safety:
- Sterile Needles: Acupuncturists use only single-use, sterile, and disposable needles.
- Possible Side Effects: While uncommon, some people may experience temporary and mild side effects such as tiredness or minor bruising at the needle insertion points. These are usually short-lived and resolve on their own.
Should I tell my doctor?
If you are receiving treatment from your doctor, it makes sense to tell him or her about your plans to have acupuncture. Most doctors are usually supportive of acupuncture as a complementary health therapy.
Why choose a British Acupuncture Council registered acupuncturist?
